Captain Jeff Purdy

Captain Jeff Captain Purdy was raised in Coral Springs, Florida. After graduating from JP Taravella High School located in Coral Springs, Fl., he attended Brevard College located in Brevard, North Carolina. He graduated Brevard College in 1989, with an Associate in Arts degree. Upon graduating from Brevard College, he enrolled at Western Carolina University located in Cullowhee, North Carolina. In 1991, he graduated from Western Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.

In 1992, Captain Purdy attended the Broward Community College Criminal Justice Academy. After the 16 week Police Academy, he graduated and was hired by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. In 1993, he moved to Hampton, South Carolina after being hired by the Fairfax Police Department located in Fairfax, South Carolina. Shortly thereafter, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office hired him as a uniformed patrolman.

Captain Purdy began serving as a uniformed patrolman in 1993, in Northern Beaufort County. In 1994, he became a member of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team. He served on the SWAT team as a member of the entry team from 1994 through 2000. In 1995, Captain Purdy was selected to serve and as a field training officer, responsible for training newly hired troops. In 1996, Captain Purdy was promoted to the rank of Corporal, transferring into the Northern Enforcement Criminal Investigations Branch. As a Criminal Investigator, he worked an array of Criminal Investigations, ranging from forgeries and burglaries to rapes, robberies and murders. In 2000, Captain Purdy was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in the Criminal Investigations Branch. Captain Purdy continued to successfully investigate a variety of criminal activity serving this community as a Criminal Investigator. Throughout his career as a Law enforcement Officer and Criminal investigator he has attended numerous courses which include: Child Physical and Sexual Abuse, Interview and Interrogation, Sexual Battery, Homicide and Crime Scene Processing. In 2001, Captain Purdy also completed a three week Forensic Science Training Course at the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s Forensic Services Laboratory. The forensic science training course focused on crime scene processing and evidence collection and preservation for forensic evidence.

In 2002, Captain Purdy was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and transferred back to the patrol division to supervise a Northern Beaufort County patrol shift. As a patrol supervisor, he successfully supervised and managed ten patrol officers. In 2003, he was transferred back to Criminal Investigations to supervise and lead the Northern Criminal Investigations Section, the Victim's Advocates and the Sex Offender Registry. Captain Purdy continued to further his education by attending several Criminal Investigations Management Courses, Advanced Homicide and Cold Case Courses. In addition, Captain Purdy taught Junior Officers and Junior Investigators the importance of crime scene preservation, evidence collection, and documentation, as well as Crime Scene Processing. In 2006, Captain Purdy was promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant where he continued to oversee the day to day operations of the Northern Criminal Investigations Section, Victim’s Advocate and Sex Offender Registry.

In 2014, Captain Purdy was transferred to the Administrative Branch, Special Operations Division. Here he was responsible for overseeing the day to day operation as they apply to the safety and security of the Beaufort Courthouse, Beaufort and Bluffton Magistrate's Courts, the Environmental Crimes Unit and the Marine Patrol. In September, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. This promotion included a transfer back to the Enforcement Branch as the assistant commander of the Criminal Investigations Division. This includes Criminal Investigations, Victim’s Assistance, the Sex Offender Registry and the development and implementation of the newly formed Crime Scene Unit.  


In January 2018, Captain Purdy was promoted to the rank of Captain and became the Northern Enforcement Patrol Commander.  As the Branch Commander, he provides guidance and oversight to the Northern Patrol, Special Enforcement Unit, Criminal Investigations Section, Sex Offenders Registry, Crime Scene Unit and Victim’s Advocates.
