At 1558 hours today Beaufort County Central Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call concerning a possible suicide at 2899 Swallowtail, a condo complex on Sea Pines Plantation, Hilton Head Island, SC.

The 9-1-1 call was placed by Dan Saxon, an attorney representing Dennis Ray Gerwing. Gerwing was named earlier in the afternoon as a person of interest in the Calvert disappearance case.

Beaufort County Sheriff's Deputies, Hilton Head Island Fire/Rescue and Sea Pines Security units responded to the scene, a multi-unit, two story residential complex. Upon arrival Gerwing was found dead in an upstairs bathroom.

Gerwing appeared to have been dead for several hours of an apparent suicide. A forensic autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Gerwing left behind two notes that are being studied for statement analysis by forensic investigators with the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

At this time, John and Elizabeth Calvert remain missing. The Sheriff's Office is continuing to actively pursue leads in the case. We believe that there are other persons in the community who have information related to this case and we encourage them to contact investigators.

The Sheriff's Office is asking anyone who may have seen either the Calverts or Dennis Gerwing or his vehicles after 5:30 pm on Monday afternoon, March 3, 2008 to contact BCSO investigators. They may have reached at either (843)524-2777 or (843)842-4234 ext 258.
