A suspect has been arrested and charged in the home invasion and shooting that occurred at a Gray's Hill home last week.
Twenty-one-year-old Charles James Gains of Beaufort was arrested at a County Shed Road residence by investigators just after 10:00 am yesterday morning. Gains has been charged with: 1st degree Burglary, Assault and Battery with Intent to Kill, two counts of Assault with Intent to Kill, Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Violent Crime, and Discharging a Firearm into a Dwelling.
Gains' charges stem from the January 25th home invasion that occurred just after 1:00 am at the residence located at 15003 Carolina Avenue. During that incident, Gains and another suspect made forced entry to residence by kicking in the front door. Once inside Gains, armed with a gun, confronted 44-year-old Eddie Simmons, who had been asleep in the bedroom.
A physical altercation ensued, during which Gains fired several shots, one of which struck Simmons. Gains and the second suspect then fled the home. Both Simmons' wife and 14-year-old son were in the residence at the time of the attack, however, neither of them sustained any physical injury.
Simmons was originally transported to Beaufort Memorial for medical treatment of his injuries, but was later transferred to Medical University of SC in Charleston for further care. Simmons remains at MUSC, however his condition is undisclosed.
Gains remains in custody at the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $130,000 bond.
The investigation remains active as the second suspect present during the attack has yet to be identified. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Beaufort County Dispatch Center at 843-524-2777 or Investigator Cpl. John Kelleher at 843-470-3217. |
