Shooting in Gray’s Hill

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating a home invasion and shooting that occurred at a Gray's Hill home early this morning.

Just after 1:00 am this morning, deputies responded to the Beaufort Memorial Hospital emergency room in reference to a gunshot victim arriving for treatment. Upon arrival, deputies met with the victim, 44-year-old Eddie Simmons, who advised deputies that he had been shot in his home.

Simmons stated that while he and his wife were sleeping, two unknown black males kicked in the front door and made entry to the home. One of the suspects was armed with a gun which he pointed at Simmons. Simmons and the armed suspect struggled, at which time the gun was discharged, striking and wounding Simmons.

The suspect fired several more shots inside the residence before both suspects fled the home on foot down Carolina Avenue. Simmons was transported to Beaufort Memorial by his wife. Neither Simmons' wife, nor his 14-year-old son, both of whom were in the home in the time of the incident, sustained any injuries.

Simmons was later transported from Beaufort Memorial to MUSC in Charleston for further treatment of his injuries. His condition remains undisclosed at this time.

The identity of the suspects is unknown. The Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to please contact the Beaufort County Dispatch Center at 843-524-2777 or Investigator Cpl. John Kelleher at 843-470-3217.
