Just after 7:30 pm, a black male subject entered the Express Lane #5 and produced a handgun. The suspect pointed the weapon at the clerk and the clerk's wife, who were sitting beside the counter. The suspect demanded and received an undisclosed amount of cash from the store's register, then fled out the front door on foot.
The suspect was described as a black male between 5'10"-6'00", wearing black pants, a gray sweatshirt, a red hat, with a red bandana covering his face. The handgun he presented was described as a being a black semi-automatic pistol with a brown wooden handle.
Deputies and members of the Sheriff's Office K-9 Tracking Team responded to the area to search for the described suspect. As the search continued, deputies made contact with a white in color Nissan Maxima occupied by two subjects traveling on Shed Rd. within the established perimeter. The vehicle was noted to be coming from the same area that the K-9 Team had just tracked towards.
As deputies spoke with the vehicle's two occupants, later identified as 19-year-old Devonte Oyola and 17-year-old Steven Glover, they noted that both appeared to be extremely nervous. Upon conducting a consensual search of the vehicle, deputies located a red bandana, a roll of cash, and a handgun matching the description of the weapon used in the armed robbery.
Based on the evidence collected and the interviews conducted, both Oyola and Glover were placed under arrest for the armed robbery of the Express Lane #5. Oyola has been charged with Armed Robbery, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Violent Crime, and Pointing and Presenting a Firearm. Glover has been charged with Armed Robbery as Oyola's co-defendant.
Investigators were also able to link Oyola to an armed robbery at the same location that occurred at the end of last year. At approximately 6:15 am on the morning of December 31st, a black male subject brandishing a handgun entered the Express Lane #5. The subject, dressed in dark clothing and wearing a red bandana over his face, demanded cash from the clerk before fleeing the area on foot.
As a result of the interview and investigation following last night's armed robbery, Oyola has been charged with an additional count of Armed Robbery and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Violent Crime for the December 31st armed robbery.
Both Oyola and Glover remain in custody at the Beaufort County Detention Center awaiting bond hearings. |
