The Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting yesterday in the area of Chaplin's Grocery Store.
At approximately 9:00 am yesterday morning, Sheriff's deputies responded to the St. Helena Fire Station located at 632 Lands End Road in reference to a report of a gunshot victim at that location.
Upon arrival, deputies met with EMS personnel who were rendering aid to 35-year-old Erik Kevin Washington for an apparent gunshot wound.
Deputies were advised by EMS personnel that they heard the sound of a vehicle horn outside the station. When they walked outside to see the source of the noise, they observed Washington climbing out of a white pick-up truck. Washington was covered in blood and advised that he'd been shot as he was leaving Chaplin's Grocery Store on Storyteller Road. Washington then apparently drove himself to the fire station to seek help.
Washington was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. His condition remains undisclosed at this time.
Witnesses in the area of Chaplin's Grocery Store reported hearing two gunshots between 8:40 and 8:45 am, and seeing a dark gray sedan of unknown make/model leaving the area. Neither the witnesses, nor Washington could provide any further possible suspect information.
