Battery Creek Shooting Suspect Turns Himself In

Michael Devon Freeman

The suspect wanted in the November 20th shooting of a Battery Creek High School student turned himself in to investigators this morning.

At approximately 9:15 am, 18-year-old Michael Devon Freeman of St. Helena turned himself in at the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office law enforcement center. Freeman was wanted on charges of: Assault and Battery with Intent to Kill, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Violent Crime, Pointing a Weapon at a Person, and Possession of a Weapon on School Property.

Freeman's charges stem from the shooting of 17-year-old Daryl Kinloch, Jr. of Lobeco. At approximately 7:15 pm on November 20th, Sheriff's deputies responded to Battery Creek High School in Burton in reference to a shooting that occurred following a basketball game.

The incident occurred as Kinloch was leaving the basketball game. As Kinloch exited the gym to the student parking area, Freeman was seen running up, pulling out a handgun, and firing several rounds at Kinloch. Freeman then fled the area and Kinloch was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for treatment by a private party.

Kinloch currently remains at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. His condition is undisclosed. Following arrest, Freeman was transported the Beaufort County Detention Center where he remains awaiting bond hearings.

The investigation continues to remain active. Investigators ask anyone with further information regarding the incident to please contact SSgt. Brian Baird at 843-470-3211 or the Beaufort County Dispatch Center at 843-524-2777.
