Lieutenant Renita L. Berry is a native of Bowman, South Carolina. After graduating from Bowman High School, she attended the University of South Carolina and received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Chemistry. She continued her advancement in education achieving a Master’s of Arts Degree in Management from Webster University.

Renita began her career as an Analytical Chemist with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). After four years with DHEC, she accepted a Forensic Chemist position with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). Under the umbrella of forensic, she specialized in the Identification of Controlled and Dangerous Substances. While at SLED, she graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy thereby obtaining her certification as a Class I Law Enforcement Officer. As a Forensic Chemist with SLED, she testified as an Expert Witness through-out the state.

In 2001, Renita was recruited by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office in order to establish the County's Drug Analysis Laboratory. Upon accepting this new career path, she resigned from SLED, moved to Beaufort County and officially opened the doors to the laboratory in March 2002. In 2008, with the additional forensic disciplines/sub-disciplines of Biology/DNA and Ignitable Liquids Identification, she was promoted to Lieutenant and appointed as the Laboratory Director of the BCSO Forensic Services Laboratory. In 2011, the laboratory successfully achieved International Accreditation through the Forensic Quality Services Forensic Accreditation Program.
